Getting to the island on the ferries
Some suggestions
* In general, plan on a half day (four hours) for each ferry passage. This includes driving and waiting time.
* Only the Washington State Ferries take vehicles to San Juan Island. The international run to Sidney (Victoria) BC is the only ferry that takes reservations. They must be made at least 24 hours prior to departure.
* You can call the Washington State Ferry system office for last minute schedule information and to make reservations for Victoria (Sidney) BC. (800-843-3779 in Washington or 206-464-6400).
* Having a car on the island is convenient, but can add hours to your ferry waiting time. You can park your car at the Anacortes ferry terminal, allowing you to arrive at the terminal just 30 minutes before departure. Rental cars, bikes and mopeds are available on San Juan Island.
* To bring a car, arrive at the terminal at least two hours early in the summer; one hour in the winter.
* The amenities at the Anacortes terminal are limited. Stop in Anacortes for take-out food and a good book. Or have a meal at Charlie's restaurant, just outside the ferry terminal.
* Waiting for a ferry in Friday Harbor is more enjoyable. The ferry parking lot is near downtown stores.
* Try to plan your departure from Sea/Tac Airport for late afternoon. Otherwise you'll have to leave the island in the early morning - and miss breakfast!
